Race preview - France, by Jack Lowe #KeepFightingMichaelPosted : Wednesday 20th June 2018 17:33:28 pm GMT

Canada GP

Sebastian Vettel's commanding victory in Canada saw him reclaim top spot in the drivers championship ahead of Hamilton. It was the other Mercedes driver in Bottas who was his nearest challenger, but truth be told a distant second place. Verstappen claimed a solid third place, along with the fastest lap, ahead of team-mate Ricciardo. Hamilton had to settle for 5th and a rather subdued performance in what is historically one of his strongest race weekends. The 2 Renault drivers finished best of the rest in 7th and 8th whilst Ocon was in the points once again for Force India. These two constructors are emerging as the top contenders in the tight midfield battle. It was disappointment again for Alonso who suffered a second consecutive retirement but his victory in Le Mans at the weekend would have made amends for that. Another fine performance from Leclerc in the Sauber as he claimed the final points position.

Top 10 - 1. Vettel, 2. Bottas, 3. Verstappen, 4. Ricciardo, 5. Hamilton, 6. Raikkonen, 7. Hulkenberg, 8. Sainz, 9. Ocon, 10. Leclerc

France

The French GP makes its return to the calendar after a decade hiatus. Back in 2008 it was a Ferrari 1-2 with Massa ahead of Raikkonen. Can they repeat the feat 10 years later or can Hamilton with his delayed engine upgrade get back in contention? The big news of the week is that Red Bull will switch to Honda engines next season, what if any impact this will have on the remainder of this season remains to be seen.

2018 podium prediction - 1. Hamilton, 2. Vettel, 3. Bottas

Fantasy Game

Vettel's victory saw him amass a total of 318 points, and he is now the leading points scorer this season with 1624 in total. An impressive haul and he is marginally cheaper at £16.52M compared to Hamilton's £16.61M. Alonso is still holding on to the best of the rest despite 2 retirements ahead of his compatriot Sainz. Which Spaniard will you back this time out? Leclerc has proved good value for money thus far and at just £7.10M looks a good option. My tips - Hamilton (£16.61m), Verstappen (£10.85m), Ocon (£8.25m). Mick Waddington's 'Waddos racers' hold a slender lead over Gio's 'Team Beretta F1 to retain his position at the top of the overall standings.

Monaco Masterclass

Daniel Ricciardo produced a masterful performance around the streets of Monaco as he claimed his maiden win in the principality. He dominated all weekend long, topping all practice sessions, claiming pole and leading every lap of the race. His display in the race with an ailing car to fend off the Ferrari of Vettel was something special. Redemption indeed for 2016! Hamilton completed the podium positions and importantly only lost 3 points to Vettel in what was anticipated to be one of Mercedes weakest races of 2018. Notable performances further down the field go to Ocon and Gasly who finished an impressive 6th and 7th respectively. Verstappen managed to get himself into the points after starting last but he will be wondering what might have been had he able to take part in qualifying with the prospect of a front row starting position.

Top 10 - 1. Ricciardo, 2. Vettel, 3. Hamilton, 4. Raikkonen, 5. Bottas, 6. Ocon, 7. Gasly, 8. Hulkenberg, 9. Verstappen, 10. Sainz

Canada GP

Several suppliers are bringing their first batch of engine upgrades in 2018 to Montreal, most notably Renault and Honda. Mercedes are also set for a boost in that department. What impact if any this will have on the pecking order we'll have to wait and see. Mercedes have dominated this race in the turbo-hybrid era, with Hamilton chasing a fourth consecutive victory in Canada and what would be a record equalling seventh in total. It was a Mercedes 1-2 last season with Ricciardo in 3rd for Red Bull. The Aussie will have to go some to repeat that performance this year however with the news that he'll be getting a grid penalty for this race due to a change in engine parts.

2018 podium forecast - 1. Hamilton, 2. Vettel, 3. Bottas

Fantasy Game

Ricciardo's pole position and race win saw him claim the highest points for a race weekend so far this season with 328 in total. At £12.49M will you back the Red Bull driver? Vettel and Hamilton delivered yet again, with consistency one of their biggest advantages so far - 208 and 193 points respectively. They now both hold over a 200 point gap to their nearest challenger in Ricciardo, emphasising their greater value. Verstappen is climbing the standings, aided by his fastest lap and positions gained bonuses. He's within 50 points of Alonso in 6th and looks good value at £10.22M. Further down Sainz has delivered some strong results of late and sees his position improve to 8th overall (just 1 point ahead of Perez!) and at just £8.54M. With the midfield as unpredictable as ever who will you favour to deliver the goods? My tips - Hamilton (£17.06M), Verstappen (£10.22M), Grosjean (£6.91M). At the top of the standings Mick Waddington’s Waddos racers hold a 95 point lead over second place ‘Maxed Out’, whilst James Lee’s ‘Piston Broke 18’ are a very credible 4th and the leading strategy 1 team. Great effort guys!

Brilliance in Barcelona

Lewis Hamilton put in a masterful performance at the Spanish GP taking a commanding victory with a gap of over 20 seconds from his team mate Bottas. Max Verstappen came home in third for his first podium of 2018. Hamilton now holds a 17 point advantage over title rival Vettel at this stage of the season. Magnussen came home in a lonely 6th place impressively for Haas ahead of the Spanish duo of Sainz and Alonso. There was more encouragement for Sauber with Leclerc getting into the points again ahead of his home grand prix.

Top 10 - 1. Hamilton, 2. Bottas, 3. Verstappen, 4. Vettel, 5. Ricciardo, 6. Magnussen, 7. Sainz, 8. Alonso, 9. Perez, 10. Leclerc

Monaco GP

Last year Ferrari dominated around the streets of Monaco with a front row lockout in qualifying with Raikkonen taking pole and a 1-2 in the race, this time with Vettel out front to extend his championship lead. Ricciardo came home in 3rd for Red Bull. Jenson Button also stood in for Alonso at McLaren as the Spaniard opted to compete in the Indy 500. With the characteristics of the circuit not favoured by the Mercedes can their rivals bounce back after the silver arrows dominant display in Spain?

2018 podium forecast - 1. Vettel, 2. Verstappen, 3. Ricciardo

Fantasy Game

Lewis Hamilton topped the standings after his dominant performance in Spain, amassing a total of 316 points thanks to claiming pole and then the race win. Bottas had another consistent race weekend with a 196 points return but has still to claim either a pole position or race victory this season - his owners will be hoping this happens sooner rather than later. Good value can be found further down the field with Magnussen, Leclerc and Alonso all in good form - the latter living up to my tips last time out along with Hamilton and Vettel. My tips - Vettel (£15.69m), Verstappen (£9.96m), Alonso (£9.27m)

Enjoy the race and don't forget to make those bonus picks!
